There are so many state parks hidden just off the beaten path that are perfect for a day trip or weekend adventure. The Kankakee River State Park lies just south of Chicago. The park is very long and narrow with a paved bike path on one side and a horse trail on the other. You can put your kayak in at one end and float down to your campground at the other end. Tent camping is on my "things to try when I retire" list. I even scoped out campsite #77 for a return trip.
