Olympic National Park

After Artfest, Bruce joined me in the Pacific northwest and we toured Olympic National Park. I couldn't decide which of the three park lodges to stay in, so we spent a night at each one. The first day we stayed at a little cabin in Sol Duc Hot Springs. We ran the gamut of weather at this resort, driving in during a rain storm and waking up to snow, but the temperature was really quite mild allowing us to get out and try a couple hiking trails. New spring moss was growing everywhere and really contrasted sharply with the fresh snow. We finally had to give up on hiking in this area and head back down the mountain, because the snow got too deep.

The second day we stayed at the Kalaloch Lodge right on the Pacific Coast - gorgeous views. On the way, we drove through Forks and took a detour to LaPush (scene of the "Twilight" books). There were signs advertising "vampire alerts" everywhere.

The third day we stayed at the Lake Quinalt Lodge (my favorite). The south side of the lake (where we stayed) is run by the National Park; the north side is run by the Quinalt Indians. On the outside of our lodge was a 2-story rain gage (on the chimney in the center of the picture). We walked the trails along the lake and through the old-growth forests. They claimed some of the trees were here before Christopher Columbus.
