Garden Makeover

When Bruce built his trash dumpster corral, it left a small chunk of yard that I thought would make a nice little garden. It's totally in the shade and doesn't get a speck of sun all day long, but I've dealt with shady spots before. I found a picture of a "serenity" garden, so that is my current inspiration. Trouble is, when I was trying to put in some plants over the Memorial Day weekend, our neighborhood was anything but serene. Boomboxes, weed-wackers, crying babies, and swimming pool partiers all seemed to be out in force over the holiday.
As part of my new garden, I'm trying to build a sculpture - something a little different than the typical bird baths and gnomes you usually find in gardens. I started with a piece of old barn board that Bruce got from his mother's farm. I tried gluing on some ceramic tile with Gorilla glue thinking it would hold up well outdoors. Mistake. I found out after it dried that Gorilla glue expands and expands and expands - about 3 or 4 times more than you put on. As the glue cured, it ran out and over the tiles, totally ruining their look (of course this happened while I was in the back yard digging holes for the plants). So back to the drawing board - I pried off all the tiles, sanded down the board, and re-varnished it. Creativity is never easy.
