Art Workshop

While I was in Florida, I took a 2-day workshop called, Sketch Your Life. It was led by Leslie Fehling, a watercolor artist whose blog I follow. Our first activity was to sketch our paint supplies. I laughed to myself with this assignment, because the local people brought WAY more supplies than I did. Luckily for them, they also brought bigger sketchbooks.
For our second assignment, we were supposed to bring something from home that had meaning for us. For me, that would obviously be a robot, but our car was already full of biking and hiking stuff. So instead, I painted my shoe (which I happened to be wearing at the time). I figured it had "meaning" for me, since I'm always counting steps with my Fitbit. Plus it was easy to paint a big square around it (the main point of the assignment). For the third activity, we were supposed to bring a snack and paint it at different stages. I picked up an apple off the breakfast bar at the Hampton Inn the week before and had been carrying it around with me knowing I'd need it for this assignment. But the apple was really getting beat up (plus it wasn't that fresh to start with). So after taking the first bite (and spitting it out), I faked the rest of the apple core drawings. At least I managed to make the apple look old. The fourth assignment was to draw pieces of candy in a grid. She timed us on each box (only 45 seconds) and then we got extra time to paint them. The fifth assignment was to illustrate a quote. I painted a lavender shadow under all the letters in my quote, but unfortunately it was too pale for my camera to pick up. The last drawing of the flowers I did later on my own.
It was an OK workshop, but not really my style. I knew when I registered that this wasn't going to be one of Leslie's typical travel sketching workshops, but I was hoping to pick up a few tips on watercolor. Unfortunately she never did any actual painting demonstrations - just lettering and borders. Oh well. It was nice spending an extra couple days in Florida.
