Last week, one of my best friends passed away. When I first met her (almost 30 years ago), she had just been diagnosed with cancer and given a 4% chance of survival. But she underwent surgery and chemo, and turned into one of those miracle survivors.
Betty and I were teachers together at Nerinx. She taught calculus and I taught physics, so we basically had the same group of students. We often did class projects together - some serious, like applying for a a graphing calculator grant, and others goofy, like holding a Pi Day Family Feud competition between our classes. Two years ago when the winter weather was driving me crazy, I called up Betty and a couple other teachers to see if they wanted to meet at BreadCo to play cards. Afterwards, Betty invited us back to her house for cake and then immediately whipped out her calendar to pick a new date, thus starting our monthly GameDay meetups. I'm going to miss my teacher friend. She was the social glue that held us all together.
