Happy Birthday, Joyce
Today was my friend, Joyce's birthday. It's bad enough to have a birthday in January, but it's a double whammy to have one this close to Christmas. Since I knew we were going to get snow and ice over the weekend, I took her out to Ted Drewes last week to celebrate. As you can see from the picture, it wasn't a whole lot warmer last week. But we celebrated the last few days of 2020 with frozen custard. Joyce got a chocolate soda. I got a Cardinal Sin - custard topped with cherries and hot fudge sauce (I figured the hot fudge would warm me up).
Progress continues slowly but surely on the Colorado house. Last week they poured the basement foundation (just the walls). Our contractor has been really great about texting a few photos, though I had a little trouble understanding exactly what I was looking at in this picture. It'll be a lot easier when they get to the door and window stage.
I've been playing around with my new Lego Inventor set. This robot is called Blast, because he has a dart gun built into his hand. So far, I haven't been able to figure out how to aim the darts in order to hit the target, so I spend a lot of time crawling around on the floor fishing darts out from under furniture.
I've been borrowing a lot of books from Amazon's Prime Reading program. The latest series I discovered is the Peyton Brooks mysteries by M.L. Hamilton. The first 7 books follow Peyton's career as a San Francisco homicide detective. In the next 5 books, she retires from the police department and goes to work for the FBI. The books are really engaging and easy to read.
For my New Year's resolution, I decided I'm not going to log steps, but instead track "active minutes." That way I can count things like swimming or riding my bike. My goal is 40,000 active minutes by the end of the year. That averages out to 110 minutes a day - a little less than 2 hours. That doesn't seem like much, but right now with all the gyms closed, about the only way I rack up minutes is by walking to the grocery store or tuning in to Silver Sneakers Zoom classes. Hopefully by the time spring rolls back around, a lot of the virus restrictions will be lifted.
