Halloween Recap

Whenever I bring out the family photo album, Courtney always complains about my dressing her up as a mummy for her first Halloween. In my defense, it's a little hard to be creative with a 7-week old baby. But I think Melissa won the prize this year for creative baby costumes.

The Taylor family had a Chiefs theme going. Lincoln was a football player, Jamie was a ref, and Violet was a cheerleader. Hazel tends to do her own thing, but I'm going to say she is a fairy godmother for the Chiefs (sometimes they need a little help in their scoring). That brown butterball in the middle with the white stitching is Goldie. Yep, you guessed it; she's a football.

Some people might think her costume is cute and clever, but I'm guessing when Goldie reaches her teen years, she's going to start complaining about Melissa dressing her up as a football. I think I'd rather be a mummy.

In other news, I refereed the robotics tournament this past weekend. In Denver they require all refs to wear a funny hat so that we'll look more "approachable" to the kids. I don't really have any funny hats, so I pinned some of my Lego buttons and minifigs onto my ball cap. I'll have to admit, since Lightyear is one of the popular kids' movies this year, they all liked my Buzz Lightyear pin.

The weather is Denver is ever-changing. Just a few days ago we had snow with temps in the 20's; this week it's back up in the 60's. So the bike club went off on another ride on the Cherry Creek Trail (notice how almost everyone is wearing shorts).

I used my new handlebar phone holder to bike the High Line Canal Trail. It's so much easier to keep track of where I'm going without having to jump on and off my bike all the time. The High Line Canal Trail is almost 71 miles long running diagonally through Denver (I only rode about 10 miles of it). This particular section reminds me of the Katy Trail (crushed stone and FLAT!). Even though it ran through the suburbs, most of the homes were fairly large with their own horse barns. Notice the great view of the mountains in the distance. There are benches all along the trail, so I took a break for a quick sketch.

The neighborhood association sponsored a Craft Fair at the Clubhouse this weekend. I missed it, because it was the same day as the robotics tournament, but my bug quilt was for sale in the silent auction.

Bruce finished up the retaining walls in the backyard, so we're finished with gardening work until next spring. My next door neighbors hired a landscape company to install a patio and redo their backyard. It certainly goes a lot faster with 6 strong workers and a backhoe. They built that whole patio in just 2 days. But they are using granite boulders for their retaining walls. The paving stones we used are about $2.47 each. When I priced granite boulders at the garden center, they were running about $700-800 each. Yikes! That's like 2 cruises to Europe. I think I like our DIY look better.
