Happy Birthday, Violet

I'm way late on this post, since Violet's birthday was 5 days ago, but she's our third milestone birthday of the year... people born in years ending with a 3. Violet's birthday is easy to remember, because it's always the day after St Patrick's Day. Five years ago, we all met in Chicago to celebrate. I was flying in from one of my Vernier conferences in Atlanta, so I got there the night before - in other words, right on St Patrick's Day. Chicago is a great place to celebrate St Patrick's Day as long as you're there early. They literally dye the river green and host a huge parade down the Magnificent Mile. But when I got there in the evening, the L train was full of drunk revelers staggering home from a day of partying. One of them threw up on my train, which instantly emptied out our car at the next stop. Luckily I was sitting at the far end of the train away from the mess and just stayed on with a handful of other people. Every time the train came to a stop, people tried to hop on, but immediately jumped back off. But I digress...

Violet celebrated her 10th birthday with 4 of her friends on a scavenger hunt. Melissa made up a series of clues they had to solve as they went from place to place around Lee's Summit. They started off with lunch at Chick-fil-A,

and then headed over to Target for a rather intensive item search. Courtney and I did not attend, but we were able to keep track of their day via Instagram.

The third stop was the nail salon. I personally would have rather hit the Lego store, but I'm not a girly-girl.

And then off to Janet's for cake. I tried to help them make the clue for heading to Janet's house by stringing words together that started with MA, but most people don't realize that when Violet was young she shortened "Grandma" to just "Ma." Melissa figured Violet's friends wouldn't have been able to figure out that clue, so she came up with another one.

They ended up back at Melissa's to open presents. It sounded like quite an eventful day - a great way to celebrate crossing over into the "tweens."
