Stair-Climbing Robots

I'm teaching a couple camps this summer on how to make a robot that can climb stairs. Not the kind of stairs that you and I would travel up and down, but a smaller set made out of Legos. It's not as easy as it looks, because the wheels get caught on the treads or the robot tips over. I tried making a robot with tank treads - worked OK, but the robot was so wide that any little deviation in direction made it drive off the edge. I finally stumbled on a website that described how to make a 4-wheel drive robot using gears. Worked like a charm. This is going to be an interesting experience, because I'm teaching one camp to kids (9-12 year olds) and one camp to teachers. Wonder which group will do the best???
