Yes, you read the title correctly. The queen of historic lodges decided to try a little tent camping. Bruce and I went to Lake Wappapello - one of the state parks in southeast Missouri. I'd never heard of this park, but a couple of friends just came back from there and raved about it (they also own an Airstream camper - should have been a heads-up).
The park is really pretty and the day was gorgeous. Our campsite was right smack on the lake, so I jumped right in and did a little paddling with my kayak.
We discovered we'd left the charcoal sitting at home in the garage, but no biggie, because the lake was surrounded by woodsy hiking trails filled with scrub logs. I like wood fires better than charcoal anyway.
I'm not really a very good cook at home, so I don't know what possessed me to think that it would be any different over a wood fire. I had the "brilliant" idea of wrapping hot dogs in biscuit dough and cooking them on the end of long forks. They looked good, but they were pretty underdone. Notice how relaxed I look in this picture? It was short-lived. A big storm came up and soaked everything (luckily not the inside of our tent - it pays to shop at REI), but no way could we get another fire going to cook our breakfast (pancakes this time). So we packed everything up and headed to McDonalds.
