Bike Ride

It was 75º today - practically unheard of for July in the Midwest. So we loaded the bikes onto the back of the car and headed over to the Katy Trail. I wanted to start in St Charles, because I figured it would be a great place to end back up for lunch, but the trail was closed just a few miles down the road for bridge work on the freeway. I found another trailhead at the Missouri Bluffs Golf Club. Too bad the whole trail isn't as nice as this little spur.
Bruce got to try out his new bike bag I gave him for a retirement present. It snaps on and off the bike rack and holds a ton of stuff. Today he just threw in some snacks and extra water bottles.
The trail runs along the Missouri River. We frequently got some really nice views through the trees. The river doesn't really look as good as it does in this picture. It's very muddy and brown right now. We stopped about 15 miles down the trail at the Augusta Brewery. That big smile on Bruce's face is probably because he was so happy not to be sitting on that tiny bike seat any more. Our total bike ride was 35 miles. Sounds like a lot, but when we ride the whole trail later in the year, our longest day will be 50 miles. Judging by the way my rear end feels, I think I need to practice a little more.
