House Closing

A week ago, we got our first in-person look at our new house. We had no grass and there were still contractors working on finishing details, like installing towel bars and window screens.

But it was very exciting to see how far it had come since we purchased a vacant lot 10 months ago.

It's really tricky trying to pick out interior finishes from a catalog of pictures and small samples. I watch a lot of HGTV home improvement shows, but I'm one of those people who prefers to live in a house and get a feel for it before making any major decisions. But I think the style and colors we picked out turned out really nice. Very neutral, but nice.

A lot of the overhead lights in the house are just blank cover plates for now, so we can decide whether to install ceiling fans or lights later, but I wanted to have the builder install the chandelier over the stairs since the ceiling is so tall.

The bathroom tile and showers doors are very striking. We had a little issue with them installing a bath tub instead of a shower pan in the second bathroom, but in the week before the final closing, they switched them out and repaired the tile. You can't tell that it wasn't originally built that way.

So now the house is finally ours. The movers haven't shown up yet, so we spent our first night sleeping on the floor and eating takeout dinner from lawn chairs on the back deck. The house is very dusty, partly from leftover residue and the wind coming off the Colorado prairie. But also from all the other new homes being built in the neighborhood. It's a little disconcerting moving from an old house with years of character (aka. flaws) to a totally new house in pristine condition. It's a blank slate with that "new house" smell and a fear of breaking something. But hopefully in a few weeks, it will look more homey... and I'll be able to quit using my suitcase as a desk for my laptop.
