5K Fun Run
Our neighborhood is supposed to be an "active" 55+ community. The social committee has been trying for months to organize a Fun Run, but the HOA management company (a bunch of 30 year olds no less) thought that was a little too risky. Most of our social events tend to involve gathering at the clubhouse to eat (usually donuts on Saturdays). Well last week, the management company was fired. We're in the process of finding a new one, but in the meantime, we finally had our Fun Run on Sunday. In reality, most people walked (and I mean strolled). Four of the 55 year olds started out running, but only 3 crossed the finish line (I think one guy stopped off at his house, but never came back out). I did a combo of run/walk - run downhill, walk uphill. I'm really not that into 5K's. I mostly did it for the t-shirt.
On Tuesday, the Geek Club and the Bike Club got together and hosted an eBike and pizza presentation. Now we usually have about 8 people show up for bike rides and 10 or so people come to Geek meetings, but on Tuesday we had over 80 people show up (I'm guessing the free pizza and beer was a big part of the attraction).
eBikes are the new senior "toy," probably because while your feet look like you're pedaling the bike, the motor attached to the back wheel is actually doing all the work. Before the presentation started, the bike shop owner brought out a variety of eBikes of all shapes and sizes. Most of them were fairly large and heavy (around 70 pounds). My favorite was this small transportable folding bike (the frame literally bends in the middle). The only trouble is, while it looks small, it actually weights 32 pounds - that's quite a lot of weight to heft into the trunk of your car.
In the meantime, I'll stick with my regular road bike - much, much lighter than an eBike and I don't have to worry about the battery dying on me. The only thing that limits how far I can ride are my own legs, and since we usually stop halfway for a coffee break (DP for me), I usually have enough energy to make it back home.
