Still Cold

Our temperature dropped back into the negative numbers again. This is getting really annoying. I might as well be in Chicago; it's much warmer there.

This week, in an effort to entertain myself (since it's too cold to do much outside), I joined a variety of neighborhood clubs. On Monday, I gave a demo at the Geek Club on refereeing robotics tournaments. I built several mission models from this year's game, and then programmed my robot like the kids would do at a competition. Since everyone in the audience was a Geek, they were fascinated with all the moves a "toy" robot could do.

On Tuesday I played Chinese Mahjong again. I'm actually getting pretty good at the game since all you have to do is wait for the right tiles to come up and match them to the ones already in your hand. I also found an online version of the game to practice with in the evenings.

I had a virtual game day with my friend, Joyce, on Wednesday morning and we played our new game for 2023 - 7 Wonders Dual. It's a 2-play version of the original game. I think it might be a bit more fun, because rather than dealing all the cards out to individual players, you lay them out in a grid with some exposed and some turned over. It's a fairly complex game with all the different ways you can win, so it keeps us on our toes.

On Wednesday afternoon, I went to the Craft Club meeting. We made quilt blocks using a technique called paper piecing. It's a fairly tedious process that's supposed to yield sharp corners (which it did), but I think I'll stick to regular old applique. It's much quicker and easier. I'm more into "fast" rather than "fancy." By the way, this is supposed to be a bird. I think you need a little imagination to see it, especially since it looks upside down to me.

On Thursday, I went to a coffee shop to do some sketching. Not Starbucks, since they all tend to look alike on the inside and I've been there a dozen times already. This shop was called Caribou Coffee. It's a chain in Denver (maybe nationwide as well). They had delicious scones and some really chocolaty mocha. I like the colors in this painting, because it looks as bleak as the weather is making us all feel.

On Friday I went to the Pickleball Club pizza party. I volunteered to be the Committee Chair for the summer Round Robin meetups. I've got about 30 other volunteers to help me, so I don't think I'm the only person who's bored out of their minds right now.

On Saturday, we went to a birthday party for one of our neighbors who is active in the Biking and Hiking Clubs. He's also celebrating a milestone birthday this year (his 70th), so we all played a game trying to guess trivia from the 60's. He picked the 60's, because he said he was 7-17 years old during that decade. I didn't get many of the history questions, but I did much better in the movies and music category.

Even with all these activities I'm still not doing very well in the step challenge with Janet. Mostly because I've been driving to these events rather than walking. Maybe I should go back to snowbirding in Florida so I can get outside in some warmer weather.
