I was really excited that we got the dry creek bed installed in the front yard, because it gives us a reference point for putting in the plants. And since our weather forecast showed 2 warm days coming up, I ran out to 2 different nurseries with my landscape plan looking for the plants on my list. But there were so many other pretty specimens that I went a little overboard on purchases (this is just one flat of 3). Since almost all these plants came in smaller pots, I was able to get quite a few of them in the ground (my professional digger, Bruce, is in Seattle). It's a nightmare trying to dig big holes in Denver's clay soil. We thought we had clay soil in St Louis, but the dirt here is just this side of concrete.
Unfortunately on Friday it snowed again! What is it with this state???? Can't they see on the calendar that we are well into spring? So I ran into the front yard and covered all my new plants with mulch. Luckily the temperature stayed around 30° so I don't think anything froze. Between the weather and the deer, this landscape renovation is driving me nuts. I just keep telling myself, I'm saving $30,000 (which is what my neighbor is paying a professional landscaper to redo her yard).
Since there wasn't any snow on the street, I decided to head back to the nursery to get some of the other plants on my list. I figure one of these days, it's going to warm up and stay warm.
While I was at the nursery, they were hosting a class on Prairie-Style Landscaping. Most of what the instructor recommended was already on my list, but I picked up a few tips (and a couple additional plants on the way out the door - luckily I get a discount in their rewards program).
