Moving the Statue

Every morning as I walk into school, I pass the statue of St Ignatius of Loyola (founder of the Society of Jesus). Yesterday it was quite a shock to see him wrapped up tight in a blanket and hoisted off his stone perch. With the school's renovation nearing completion, St Ignatius is being moved to the new entrance outside the student commons. As a teacher, it was fascinating to watch the process of lifting this heavy bronze sculpture with a set of pulleys (I actually ran inside the building and sent the physics students out to see it). The transfer took the entire day. Since there are stairs between his new location and his old (and the statue was definitely too big to put in the elevator), they had to put him on a truck (see the wooden palette on the lower left) and drive him around to the south side of the building. I can't believe the worker on the left actually put his hand under the statue as it was being lifted.
