New Picture

When I was at the Clayton Art Fair a few weeks ago, I saw a really neat collage that had a black painting screen-printed over a colored background. So I decided to try out the technique for myself. I'm not used to working on a large canvas, but I wanted to make something large enough to fit over my Dad's fireplace and cover up the support holes from the banjo that used to hang there. I took an old photograph of the grandkids, posterized it in Photoshop, printed it out on tissue paper, and then collaged it onto a background I painted in greens, reds, and browns. It took me eight sheets of tissue paper to cover a canvas this big, because my printer will only do 8-1/2" x 11" sheets of paper, but you can't even tell where the seams are unless you get your nose right up into it.
