Fort Hays

On a recent trip across Kansas, we stopped at Thirsty's Brew Pub & Grill in Hays for dinner. Thirsty's is a fairly large restaurant decorated to look like an old 60's diner. Along with the typical photos of the Rat Pack, James Dean, and Audrey Hepburn, they had a life-size statue of Marilyn Monroe. Everyone going in and out (including us) took a picture standing next to her.
I took a little side trip over to Fort Hays to do some sketching. There really aren't many buildings left - mostly a lot of flat empty lawn with imprints of old foundations where buildings used to be.
But the original stone barracks was still standing, so I painted it. I spent over an hour on the first sketch, but I think I overworked the paint. I spent 10 minutes on the 2nd sketch. I like the color better (it's much brighter), but I didn't have time to put in much detail. I considered sketching the wagon, but circles are not my forte.
